Free to be Fierce: A Guide to the July 23rd New Moon in Leo

On Saturday, July 22nd, the Sun moves into Leo. Sunday, July 23rd, the Moon will rebirth herself at 0 degrees of Leo. This is the first of two new moons in Leo this year. The next one will be a total Solar Eclipse that will move across the United States in the last degrees of this fiery, passionate, courageous sign. I will write more about the eclipse season over the next month. This first new moon ignites an Eclipse season that promises to have a serious impact—especially for those of us in the United States.

The new moon conjoins the Sabian Symbol: “Blood Rushes To A Man’s Head As His Vital Energies Are Mobilized Under The Spur Of Ambition.” Vitality. Mobilization. Ambition. These are themes that will definitely emerge during this lunar cycle and, as such, they are themes to meditate upon in forming intentions for the next two weeks, the next month, and the next six months.

Leo is a lion. Lions are courageous creatures. They are loyal, loving, and protective of those they love. They are mostly quite calm. They do not need to assert their power. Their very existence on this planet emanates power. They are beautiful creatures, indeed. In my opinion, the lioness is one of the most admirable creatures in the animal queendom. The female lion does the hunting, but she isn’t violent or harsh. The lioness is calm until provoked. Do not provoke a lioness. Do not threaten who and what a lioness loves. You won’t win. You won’t even live to tell the story. She is fiercely protective. The lioness, though, is not fiercely against. She is fiercely for. She has no desire to attack you unless a threat is placed against her or those she loves. She roars for what she loves. She roars for who she loves. She roars her passion. She roars her loyalty. She roars. This new moon asks us to manifest this same fierceness, this same passion for all that we love and hold dear.

What are you fiercely for? What are you passionate about? What is so much a part of your being that you will fight for it but don’t even have to because the energy of that thing, that person, that idea emanates from your being inherently? Like the lion …

Leo is the sign of self-expression. Leo is ruled by the Sun—ruled by the solitary source of energy on the planet, a star, an entity that maintains life by exploding perpetually. This new moon wants to know how you’re going to express yourself, your life, and your passion—over the next two weeks and over the next 6 months. What motivates you so much that it forces you to explode with energy perpetually? This new moon is fierce. This new moon is fiercely about you, about how far you will go, about how deeply you are willing to mine your own mind and soul for the courage to live into the fullness of your own expressions, your own experiences, your own identities, your own passions.

Leo is the fifth sign of the Zodiac. The fifth house represents the parts of your life related to fun, play, creativity, sex, love, children, and self-expression. It is where you burst onto center stage, proclaiming “Here I am!” These are the themes that will interact with this fierce lioness energy. This lunar cycle might highlight a fierceness for care for a child or children’s issues generally. It might point to a new or renewed relationship that is deeply loyal and emerges from love that is fierce, fiery, passionate. It might point to conception or birth of a child or creative project and the need to sacrifice, to take responsibility, and to support your creations fully.

When this moon reaches its culmination in two weeks, we will be asked to let go of something big in order to make space for something so much greater a month from now. Prepare yourselves and take care of yourselves and those you love most. Please secure your own mask before trying to secure another’s and keep your seatbelt fastened. It’s going to be an interesting ride.

Full Moon Blessings
