Take Your Time, Do It Right: A Reflection on the New Moon in Capricorn

New Moon in Capricorn 1-16-2018

I have a yoga teacher who says, “Only you know how hard you’re working.”

No matter how it appears on the outside, only you know how hard you’re working. It’s possible that you’re putting every ounce of effort into something that appears effortless to others. Similarly, you can appear to be struggling externally while putting forth minimal effort. Tonight’s new moon is in Capricorn, the house of Saturn. Saturn doesn’t care much about what it looks like on the outside. He cares that you do what you set out to do. He cares that you finish what you started, that you do it well, and that you do it properly.

It’s true that Capricorn energy can feel limiting, but I don’t think focusing on these restrictions is always the most helpful way of moving forward. Capricorn is Saturn’s house. Saturn teaches us mastery. He teaches how to fine tune, hone, refine your innate gifts and the skills that you’ve worked endlessly to achieve. Those limitations you sometimes feel may simply be temporary restrictions or losses of one sense so that you can strengthen another. Every human has challenges. It’s easy to focus on our strengths. It’s easy to continuously pursue the things that are easy. And yet, we can find great growth and satisfaction when we strengthen those gifts to give us a foundation and sense of worth that can help us to overcome our challenges and limitations.

Capricorn is full of energy right now. This expands the sense of challenge that you may be feeling in your life. And yet, it makes for a potent new moon because it also expands your opportunity to receive things that you never thought possible. The Moon waxes and wanes, builds and releases. A full moon is a manifestation. You receive something and, as a result, you’re able to let go of something as the moon wanes. When you release energy, you make room for something new. Each new moon is an opportunity to invite something into your life that you’ve never had, experienced, or been before.

Capricorn doesn’t move quickly, but it moves thoroughly. It not only finishes what it starts, it finishes it well. Saturn’s house can feel restrictive, but it’s one place you know you’ll get shit done. It might take a little longer than you hoped, but it’s very often a little bit better than you hoped. It’s often a little bit more real than you hoped. And the thing about real achievements is that they always set us free in some kind of way. Overcoming a limitation, proving to yourself that you have the capacity to do something you thought was impossible is a form of liberation. It doesn’t matter how big or small the task and it’s not always even a task. Sometimes, the achievement, the thing you’re striving for, is a way of being, a way of seeing. But Capricorn is not known for the small tasks, so why not go for the gold?

Be mindful, though, when you ask for help in Saturn’s house. If you go to him with a request, undoubtedly, he will give you the thing that will allow you to reach the goal or live out the intention you’ve set for yourself. And he expects you to do what you say you’re going to do. In Saturn’s house, you have to finish what you start. No matter what. There are no excuses. There’s no one to blame. You asked for this life before you were born. Dreaming is the easy part. Doing is where the rubber hits the road. When you enter Saturn’s house, your destiny is to push through regardless of your identity. Have I mentioned that there are no excuses?

If you want the results, you have to do the work. If you want sustainable outcomes, you have to build the structures necessary to support yourself, your life, and your dreams over time. Nevertheless, I could never emphasize enough that despite his straight hard edge, Saturn wants to help you build the structures that will support you. Consider that Capricorn is opposite Cancer, the sign of nurturing. You are born in Cancer’s fertile waters. But eventually, those waters recede. When they do, your own Capricorn energy (we all have it in our charts) wants to ensure that you have the structure to remain above ground even when there’s nothing in which to float. Saturn grows you up.

Maybe you’ve never known your own power. Maybe you’ve been coddled so much that you’ve never even been given the chance to demonstrate your own power. Capricorn will throw you into the deep end of the pool when you’re not sure if you can swim. If you can or you can’t, you’ll find out at Saturn’s house. But most likely, you can. Capricorn knows that everyone can find the way. Everyone who puts the work in can find a structure in their life that works for them. There’s always a way for the willing. In Saturn’s house, everyone is equal—equally challenged, equal in the chances they’re given if they prove that they’re willing. It’s not about a perfect process, it’s about your very best progress.

Call on Capricorn when you need to bust out the big guns. Capricorn is the big guns—literally. Capricorn is power and power structures—so unhealthy or unbalanced Capricorn energy can be problematic, can be dangerous, can be hurtful. It is all about itself and its ego. It’s all about its own accomplishments and being right. Capricorn is judgy. However, when Capricorn is balanced, its energy is poised, refined, well calculated, self-controlled, persistent, able to achieve absolutely anything. And this new moon wants to imbue you with the belief that you, too, can achieve absolutely anything if you’re prepared to commit to the work.

Commitment … that’s what this moon is asking of you.

But don’t just commit to anything. Commit to the thing that’s most worth committing to. Capricorn takes its time. Don’t be afraid to take some time to sit and listen to the whispers of your heart, the shouts of your spirit. Pluto is in Capricorn right now and sextile Jupiter during this moon. Your deepest self and/or your deepest wounds might emerge over the next day or two if you meditate. You may see more clearly than ever before a relationship between your deepest, rawest, most primal self and your desires and dreams. Perhaps these things have been working against you or against one another. If so, how can you bring them together cooperate and work for you? Venus is in Capricorn. Capricorn is structure. There’s no structure without connections, joints, shared walls. And yet, when Venus is in Capricorn, there’s also no connection without structure.

Look! This isn’t a free-for-all! Pluto is in the mix speaking to Mars in his home turf of Scorpio. That offers us immense passion, drive, force to go deep and push outward into the world and one another in positive and negative ways, in transformative ways. Love is freedom, but freedom isn’t free. If you want the love, the freedom, the goodness, the badge, the win, the body, the belt, the degree, or the ability to move through the world as exactly the person you are called to be, you have to be prepared to make the commitment. You have to be prepared to promise that you’ll put in the work even when it gets hard—and it will get hard. Maybe you want a relationship, a career, a project, an identity, a new craft or skill. No matter what it is, it will take time and it will take work. But trust me on this one … under the current celestial influences, if you ask for it and you’re willing to do the work, you will get exactly what you want. And it will be solid and real—more real than you can imagine. Unbreakable.

Take your time. Do it right. Don’t look around you. Your destiny isn’t the same as anyone else’s. Your work is yours alone. It has to be done. Do it. You have the power.

Many blessings under this new moon.
