Daily Tarot Reflection – 5 Feb 2018 – The 4 of Cups

Several years ago, when I began recovering from being a critical theorist, I came up with a rule for myself, my students, and those who wanted to engage with me: if you’re going to be against something, you have to be for something. What you resist persists, so there’s little to no use in fighting what you don’t want. Alternatively, it’s extremely productive to continuously imagine and seek to create what you do want. More creating, less criticizing. This isn’t only true in political theory and social justice. It’s just as true in life. If your life doesn’t look the way you want it to, don’t complain about it. Decide what you want and go and get it. Make a change. Create what you want. Everything you want is in reach if you put out your hand and ask. If your life doesn’t look the way you want it to, you’re the only one who can change it. It can be easy to blame others—people, places, systems. It can be easy to say, “Well, I’m unhappy because this place sucks or that person doesn’t like me or the system makes it so hard.” And all of that might be true, but it’s not really that important. What’s important is your soul’s desire. What’s important is your willingness to be honest with yourself about what you want and need to fulfill your destiny in the world. Turn your criticism into curiosity. Why did someone do that thing? Why did IIII do that thing? What truth does this situation want to reveal to me? What is MY truth in this moment? What does what you don’t like have to tell you about what you DO like, want, and value? Today, go deep. Be grateful. Be honest. Don’t tell yourself or anyone else what you don’t want. Allow yourself to imagine exactly what you DO want. And then, take the shortest straightest path you can to get there. Happy travels. Ache 🙏🏼
